Mission Accomplished

Dasher-1 glided in for a landing at about 21:30 tonight. The mission was successful. Although we didn’t accomplish everything the client wanted, I did accumulate over 30 billable hours. I always consider that a success.

One of these days, I’m going to have to get me one of those new fangled laptops. Then I can post a few entries from the hotel room. Although I look at them in the Dell website, I haven’t made up my mind which one I would want.

Ted,

The first decision for a new laptop is whether you want speed and power as opposed to a lightweight laptop.

At work we purchase Dell's Latitude series laptops. I think we're using the D610 right now. We go with 512 min ram.

For personal use, I like the Inspiron series. It is heavier, but I think I get a larger screen. I have a Inspiron 5150 with 1 gig RAM and a 2.66 gig processor. The only thing I would do differently if I was to purchase a new one is to have a built in wireless card. Many hotels now provide wireless internet.

The laptop comes with a built in network and dial up adapter. It also have 2 USB ports which works well with the Lexar JumpDrive.

I like the larger 15 inch screen. Also I always use an external mouse. I just can't get use to the touchpad. Disabling the touch pad is difficult. I've gotten around this by just taking a few pieces of 80 or 110 pound cardstock and taping over the touchpad.

This setup, along with the battery and A/C adapter does make for a heavier unit. However I needed a system where I could load up on RAM to help with all of the graphic work that I do.

I'm leaning towards smaller rather than larger. Since I have desktops both at the office and at home, this would be strictly for when I'm at neither location and want to access the net. The Dell Inspiron 700m interests me.

I agree with you about the mouse thing. I've never really gotten the hang of those finger things. I prefer a real mouse.
