Return to Base

I have returned from my trip to North Jersey. I accumulated quite a few of billable hours, which was the goal in the first place. Unfortunately I had to cut the mission short. This morning I showed up for a PET scan and then an MRI.

This afternoon the doctor called as asked me to come into his office. It seems the MRI found a few tumors in my brain. Sigh. He has immediately scheduled me for radiation therapy on Monday and I will start Chemotherapy on Wednesday.

I ordered a laptop from Dell - a Latitude D610. I'm typing on it now. I lit it up and it found a wireless network. someone in the neighborhood is running an unsecured network. That's a no-no, but I'll take advantage of it until I get my wireless router connected.

The Chemo takes five hours and I will go every three weeks. At least with the laptop I will have something to keep me occupied. I plan on subscribing to Verizon's wireless internet service.

How often will you go for radiation? With the chemo do you go once every three weeks?

I've heard of cases where this has really helped.

The Dell Latitude D610 is an excellent choice. I've bought 3 or 4 of them in the last year. It is a great computer with the built in wireless card. Works great. In downtown Baltimore, I booted one up and found 9 networks. Most were weak signals, but several were strong.

The Verizon sounds great. I believe it is about $60 a month. I understand that San Francisco is putting in wireless broadband across the city for free.

How much memory did you get on the laptop? Did you get the new version of Office with it?

I don't know the frequency on the radiation yet.

I got 1GB of RAM on the laptop. I will be installing my Microsoft Action Pack Subscription to it so I'll have all the office stuff.

Do you have any suggestions for something to keep you lap cool when you have the thing on your lap. It gets pretty warm.

1 gig ram is what I recommend. You should be fine. Yes, it does get hot on your lap. I don't put anything under the laptop even when on my lap. I'm always concerned about the fan not having enough circulation and that it would make the laptop even hotter than it is.

It really is a sweet little laptop. The only problem with laptops is the mouse pad. It is a pain to disable it. I never use it as I always connect a USB mouse. I finally figured out what to do. I got several thick pieces of cardstock, cut to the proper size, then taped over the mousepad.

I too like a real mouse.
