Pet Peeves

I have two pet peeves – probably more but this is what comes to mind at the moment.

Spam Blockers
I was reminded of this when I attempted to email someone and got a bounce-back. The autoresponder said that to reduce spam it only accepts emails from people that are registered to send emails to the recipient. It then gave me a link in which I could register myself.

I didn’t bother. In my opinion, there are plenty of good spam blockers out there that don’t require your friends to jump through hoops. I use something called SpamBayes. It is a free download, but it only works with Outlook. If you’re using Outlook Express or something else, there are solutions for them too.

Call Waiting
Have you ever been talking so someone on the phone and they say, “Hang on a minute, I have another call.” Then they disappear from the line for a couple of minutes.

I think that is rude. I think what they are really saying is, “I have another call that may be more important that talking to you.”

Now, when I have that done, I just hang up. If they call me back, I say, “Gee, I guess we got disconnected.”

If you really must not miss a single phone call, get a voice mail system with your phone company that automatically routes a second call to voice mail.

I guess that’s enough rant for one night.

Oh my. don't get me started on the e-mail blockers and call-waiting. I, too, find it very rude and frustrating to have someone tell you on the phone, just as you're beginning to tell the MOST interesting story, they say - "Oh, can you hang on a minute, I have another call". Which might well be more important than mine, but, I don't think they should convey that to me. That's why we don't have call waiting - if they want to talk to us badly enough, I'm sure they'll call back. And, that's my crabby talk for today. Ruth

Gee, I thought it was only me that was that crabby. I too don't have call waiting. As you way, if it's important, they can call back. They'll get a busy signal so they know you're home.

Blogs suffer from what's call comment spam. There are pieces of software that roam the net putting commerical messages into the comments of blogs.

Some people chose to make the commenter register to be able to post a comment. I have chosen another route to limit comment spam. It's not perfect, but one a week or so gets through. I figure why make difficult for friends to comment.

On the email front, Mozilla Thunderbird uses a bayesian(sp) filter as well (that's what spam bayes is). I've found that it works as good as spam bayes in Outlook after some training which it does automatically when you identify mail as either junk or not junk similar to SB but more integrated into the UI.

I use Thunderbird almost exclusively because it doesn't slow down my whole computer like Outlook does and uses about 40% less RAM and gives me the same experience with my email that Outlook does and does way better with my IMAP server. Plus it handles RSS feeds just like newsgroups or email.

The call waiting feature is something that I hate. I would never have it. I also consider it very rude.

Not only don't I have call waiting, I also don't have caller ID. If the phone rings, I answer it. If it is a telemarketer, I never acknowledge their existence. I just keep saying "hello, hello?" and then hang up. The caller will then report the trouble to their supervisor and confusion will begin. ;-)
